Incorporated in 1911, the tiny town of Banner Elk has a whopping 1,067 residents, all of whom love their “best kept secret”. Nestled into the Blue Ridge Mountains of the North Carolina High Country, the quaint little village is situated between Sugar and Beech Mountains/ski resorts, making it a top ski vacation destination. Not a skier? No biggie – you can snowboard, tube, ice skate or throw on a pair of snow shoes and go, go, go! There’s a considerable range of accommodations including cabins, condos, bed-n-breakfasts, hotels and even homes to rent. Want to know more? Visit NC’s Ski Town for more information.

But skiing is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. For a town that is just 1.9 square miles in size, there is so much to do, see, hear, eat and love here. Let’s start with a few main attractions such as Grandfather Mountain, a place so popular more than 250,000 guests visit each year! Hike the Greenway Trail, admire 360-degree panoramic views from Grandfather Mountain’s Mile High Swinging Bridge, come face-to-face with rescued black bears, cougars, elk, bald eagles and river otters (each living in their respective habitats) at Grandfather Mountain’s Nature Park’s wildlife habitat, picnic or visit the nature museum. Like wine (who doesn’t)? Sip away at Grandfather Vineyards Winery, where you’ll be savor more than half a dozen exquisite wines. Fan of whites? Try a Pinot Gris or Chardonnay. Prefer reds? How about Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon or Franc? There are also blends and more to taste.

And once we sip, the need to eat isn’t ever far behind. So, you say you’re hungry? There’s always something good (maybe even great) to eat. This tiny town boasts a huge food scene. From quick nibbles to artisan goods, ethnic faves to gourmet culinary genius, Banner Elk has most anything you might want. You want restaurant names? You got it. Try Artisinal, A Chef’s Table, Cam Rahn Bay for Vietnamese, Banner Elk Café & Lodge and Stonewalls, to name a few. There are far too many to share here so visit Banner Elk’s website for a more comprehensive list.
